A short history regarding the origin of Watford and how it has developed over the years

The name Watford first appeared in an Anglo-Saxon charter of 1007AD and is probably derived from the Old English words Waet (meaning full of water, because the area was notoriously liable to flood in winter) and ford (a shallow point across the River Colne where the river could be crossed).

By 1771, Watford was still only a village of 2000 inhabitants but things began to change when the grand Union Canal was built in the1790.  In addition this Watford also had a charter to hold a weekly market and so grew by virtue of its status as a market town.  The London to Birmingham Railway arrived at Watford in the 1840s and the branch line to St Albans in 1858, when the station was re-named Watford Junction.

Watford has developed as a result of these transport links into a key business centre just North of London with many businesses choosing to use Watford as the office base of businesses spread along the M1 And A1 corridor.  We at KR Accountants with our offices in Clarendon Road are here to help small and medium sized businesses in the local and surrounding areas.  Please look through our website and see the services we have to offer.
